International Student Coordination Unit – PGIHS

The International Student Coordination Unit of the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (PGIHS), University of Peradeniya, serves as a dedicated support hub for international students. It facilitates academic, administrative, and cultural integration by assisting with admissions, visa guidance, accommodation, and orientation. The unit also promotes international collaboration and enhances the global learning experience, ensuring international students have a welcoming and enriching stay at PGIHS.

What are the study options available for international students at PGIHS?

 

International students may be registered under one of the following categories:

  • Regular Full-time Student
    Enrolled in a full-time postgraduate program, attending classes or conducting research during regular working hours.
  • Regular Part-time Student
    Enrolled part-time, balancing coursework and research with other commitments.
  • Exchange Student
    From another recognized institution, undertaking short-term study or research at PGIHS on a credit transfer basis.
  • Casual Student
    Registered to take courses or conduct research on a non-credit transfer basis. A certificate is issued upon completion.

How do I apply to a postgraduate program at PGIHS?

You can contact the International Student Coordinator or the PGIHS Office. Ensure you review the specific program’s admission criteria, required documents, and deadlines.

What are the language requirements for admission?

All programs at PGIHS are conducted in English. Non-native English speakers may need to provide English proficiency test scores (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS).

What type of visa do I need to study or conduct research at PGIHS?

You must obtain:

  • An Entry Visa before arriving in Sri Lanka, and
  • A Residence Visa (Education) within 30 days of arrival.

A tourist or visit visa is not valid for obtaining a Residence Visa.

How early should I begin the visa process?

You should begin the visa process at least 3 months before your planned arrival to ensure timely approvals and coordination.

Who should I contact for visa arrangements?

Contact the International Student Coordinator at PGIHS. Exchange students may also directly contact the International Office at the University of Peradeniya.

What documents are required for the Entry Visa?

To obtain prior approval, you will need:

  • Scanned bio page of your passport
  • Residence visa page (if residing in a country other than your own)
  • Security clearance from your country of residence
  • Letter of admission/invitation from PGIHS
  • Academic records (e.g., transcripts, recommendation letters)
  • Payment for visa approval and embassy processing

What documents are needed for the Residence Visa (after arrival)?

Within 30 days of arrival, submit:

  • Scanned passport bio page
  • Two completed IM 35 Residence Visa application forms
  • Photocopy of passport
  • Two passport-sized photographs (35mm x 45mm)
  • Letter of admission/invitation
  • Proof of payment
  • Mandatory Health Protection Plan
  • Visa fee

What are the basic fees that all international students must pay at registration?

Program-specific tuition fees vary by course and nationality. Please refer to the PGIHS Fee Structure for details.

What is the cost of living in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka?

Monthly expenses typically range from USD 200–300, depending on lifestyle and housing choices.

Can I work while studying in Sri Lanka?

No. International students are not allowed to work while holding a student visa in Sri Lanka.
