The Master of Science in Banking (SLQF 10) degree has been built on research-based principles and practical orientation with an international focus for the graduates to be able to resolve complex problems in the banking industry both nationally and internationally. The programme expects to lay the foundation for successful careers in the banking sector combining the study of modern economics with banking founded on the principles of social sciences, especially core knowledge in economics. The Master of Science in Banking –MSc (Banking) is a two year coursework and research degree programme.
The degree programme has the following objectives:
- Provide students with an opportunity to broaden and enhance their knowledge and skills in the areas of domestic and international banking,
- Provide a strong theoretical and practical learning to equip graduates to become successful bankers,
- Enable graduates to apply skills and competences in advanced banking,
- Develop research skills to enable graduates to be able to innovate in the banking industry for resolving complex problems,
- Inculcate the required temperament and values to make things happen for the better in the world of work,
- Inculcate the ability to resolve complex and evolving problems in the banking industry,
- Enable graduates to confront changing dynamics in the banking industry and contribute improving human welfare,
- Train graduates to be global citizens, and
- Produce a humanistic and competent banking professional.
Target Groups
The MSc in Banking targets the current and/or future employees in the banking industry (both national and international) including central banks. The program has a broad-based focus as graduates from different fields of study in the bachelor’s degree levels become or expect to become employees in the banking industry who are expected to follow this study program. These different graduates require advanced and intellectually rich training in banking theory, practice, and skills with internationally recognized qualification to advance in the careers and contribute better to the progress of the banking industry and economic development. The program is, therefore, open to any graduate who is or will be, employed as a banking employee in the banking industry, including in Central Banks and related fields. The program also targets current and/or future employees of multilateral financial institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and Asian Development Bank.
Eligibility Criteria
A candidate who possesses one of the following qualifications will be eligible to apply for the Master of Science in Banking degree program:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Banking, Economics, Management, Accounting, Finance,
Business Administration, or Social Sciences obtained from a University or Higher Educational
Institution recognized by the UGC; OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in any other field obtained from a University or Higher Educational Institution recognized by the UGC with one year of work experience in the banking/financial sector; OR
- Any other professional qualification/s equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree as accepted by the Board of Study of the institute and the Senate and three years of work experience in the banking/financial sector.

Dissertation/Thesis
A student who follows the Master of Science in Banking – MSc (Banking) undertakes independent research under a supervisor/ panel of supervisors and writes a dissertation/thesis of 25,000-30,000 words on a selected title approved by the relevant Board of Study. This research project provides students with knowledge in the relevant area and skills required to undertake a scientific study, critically analyze research outcomes and present them in public. The dissertation will be assessed by two examiners and a Vivavoce Examination Board.
Programme Requirements
Students following the MSc in Banking degree programme are required to earn 60 credits (45 credits from courses with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and 15 credits from the dissertation) to complete the degree.
